A classic of its kind — the German-style tavern mug made in Japan during the mid-20th century, when this aesthetic was beloved and widely collected. Three bearded gentlemen sit at a table on one side; a castle nestled in the woods graces the other. The figures are embossed and hand painted in muted, earthy tones — browns, beiges, soft blues and greens — the palette of an old European countryside.
Stamped on the bottom: JAPAN. These Japanese-made German-style steins were produced in great numbers during the 1950s and 60s and are now a collectible category of their own, sought after by barware collectors and lovers of mid-century kitsch alike.
A note on condition: this mug has several cracks (photographed) but no chips. It is best used as a decorative piece — wonderful grouped with similar steins on a bar shelf, in a cabinet, or as part of a fall or Oktoberfest vignette.
